✦ Synopsis

Picosecond absorption spectroscopy has been used to examine the primary pho~oprodact of Cr(CO), in both neat and mixtures of THF and cyclohexane. The primary intermediate observed is shown to be she solvated pentacarbanyl in uhich one solvent molecule occupies the coordination sire created by the photoeL%mination of CO_ The rate of exchange of cyclohexane from (cyclohexane)Cr(CO)s by THF to form (THF)CI(CO)~ was found to be bimolecular, k = (4 t 1) X lo7 mole-' s-1 1 with an enthalpy and entropy of activation of 1 f 1 kc&mole and -20 5 4 eu. respectively_

The electronic effects of the chromium tricarbonyl fragment on the structure of the benzene ring of (Ξ· 6 -C 6 H 6 )Cr(CO) 3 is investigated theoretically using ab initio molecular orbital calculations with electron correlation included by using both MΓΈller-Plesset second-order calculations and densi
