✦ Synopsis

The experimental results of time-resolved coherent resonance Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy of the excited electronic S, state of tram-stilbene in ethanol are presented. The detected considerable changes in vibrational spectra due to "optical depletion" of the population of the S, state reflect the picosecond kinetics of vibrational-translational relaxation of vibrationally "hot" excited molecules.

To examine vibrational cooling of trans-stilbene in the S 1 state, transient temperatures of a few vibrational modes were estimated by analyzing transient anti-Stokes and Stokes Raman intensities. Vibrational temperatures obtained for the olefinic C C and C-Ph stretches are 900 and 680 K, respective
