โœฆ Synopsis

The 53rd Physics Exhibition was held at Alexandra Palace, London on 10--13 March 1969. Among the 130 exhibits were the following displays of cryogenic instruments and apparatus.

Automatic Systems Laboratories

Shown in the illustration below is the Cryobridge, which has been developed by ASL with the help of the National Research Development Corporation. This is basically a self balancing a c potentiometer which measures temperature by a ratiometer method, whereby a resistance type thermometer is automatically compared with an internal standard resistor at low frequency a c. It is a completely solid state instrument, incorporating digital circuit techniques, which optimize balancing speed, accuracy, and sensitivity. By using the Cryobridge with either carbon or germanium thermometers at 1 K, temperature changes of as little as 5 x 10 -6K can be recorded, in less than 3.5 s. In addition to direct readout, the Cryobridge provides a digital output to facilitate on line computor control of processes.

ASL also exhibited the Type 1050 Digital Display Unit, which is designed for the automatic collection of creep data and for precise gauging application. This can measure displacement to an accuracy of 0.1 lam, over a transducer movement range of 10 mm, in less than 50 ms.
