β¦ Synopsis
The physicochemical properties of the quinoline-soluble mesophase (QSmeso) and the quinoline-insoluble mesophase (QImeso) prepared from heat-treated coal-tar pitch were characterized by means of FT-IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, adsorption behavior of iodine, and measurement of heat of immersion. The results of FT-IR. NMR, X-ray and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the QImeso has a higher aromaticity and lower graphitizability than those of the QSmeso. The iodine adsorption on both the QSmeso and QImeso is remarkably influenced by their heat-treatment temperatures. The QImeso and QSmeso have much stronger affinity to aromatic solvents than to aliphatic ones.
