✦ Synopsis

The morphology of two acid catalysed furfuraldehyde resins (FH and FAH) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry and volumetric adsorption. The pore size distribution of these resins showed maxima around 23 and 60 nm for FH and FAH, respectively. The study of adsorption processes of nitrogen at 77 K and carbon dioxide at 195 and 251 K in FH and FAH allowed calculation of the E c parameter of a Dubinin's type equation, and other thermodynamic parameters. It appears that both resins have a greater affinity for carbon dioxide.

Some resins have been synthesized by reacting quinacetophenone with substituted benzoic acids and furfuraldehyde in the presence of basic catalysts. The resins have been characterized by IR spectra of the characteristic groups. The number average molecular weights of the resins have been evaluated b
