✦ Synopsis
Energy expenditure (EE) was estimated in 282 Taiwanese adolescents 12-14 years of age, 138 boys and 144 girls, using the 3-day activity record and protocol of Bouchard et al. Am. J. . Total daily estimated EE and EE in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (about 4 t METS) were considered on a weekday and weekend day by age and sex, and relative to area of residence and socioeconomic status (SES). Estimated total daily EE and EE in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity are higher in boys than girls, and on weekend days than weekdays. Urban-rural and SES differences in the two estimates of EE in boys are not significant, while corresponding comparisons in girls are not consistent. Results of multiple and stepwise regression analyses indicate that age, sex, area of residence, and SES account for only about 15-17% of the variance in estimated daily EE and EE in moderate-to-vigorous activity.
