Irradiation of a series of aryl substituted phthalimides in the presence of 2,3dimethyl-2-butene results in a single regiochemical photoreduction product for each substituent. The results are consistent with substituent stabilization effects on the intermediate phthalimide radical anion.

β¦ Synopsis
I'olyhalo~ena~cd anthraquinoncs such as pernuoroanthraquinone. 1,2,3,4-tctrafluoroanthraquinone, and 1,2,3,4-tetmcllioro;l~lrllraquinonc xc photorcduced in ethanol via direct electron transfer from ethanol. A dramatic switch-over from Il>*drogen-atom abstraction to electron transfer is induced by mhin_g of m with nn* states in their T1 state and the enh;lnccd rlccrron-accepting character of polyhalogznated anthraquinones.
