Abstract

The photoreactions of some methoxynitro‐, dimethoxynitro‐ and dinitronaph‐thalenes in alkaline medium are described. From the reactions observed (substitution of OCH~3~ or NO~2~ by OH) it appears that in the excited state of the naphthalene derivatives a nitro group in the one ring exerts a definite activating influence also on positions in the other ring. In these reactions specific “meta‐activation” was established.
