✦ Synopsis

H2 photoevolution from sulfur and sulfide by Chromatiaceae belonging to the genera Chromatium, Thiocapsa, Thiocystis and Ectothiorhodospira has been investigated. In the presence of sulfide, six of the eight strains studied evolve hydrogen. With sulfur, Ectothiorhodospira produce H 2 but the other strains excrete sulfide. Manometric experiments show a correlation between H 2 evolution and CO2 assimilation and an increase of endogenous substrate utilization with sulfide in Ectothiorhodospira.
