✦ Synopsis

Steady-state and time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectra of evaporated rhodamine B layers (pure and mixed with NaF) were compared with RhB-polymer layers. Excitation spectra allow for the analysis of aggregate structures. Light harvesting is accomplished via energy transfer from high-lying exciton states to monomers, which otherwise can be quenched by lower, nonemitting exciton states. Aggregation of dye monomers is minimized by increasing quantities of coevaporated NaF.

By absorption and fluorescence measurements (steady-state and time-resolved), the aggregation behavior of pure evaporated merocyanine layers was analyzed and compared with that observed when the dye is evaporated with inorganic admixtures (metal halides, TiO>). While in pure merocyanine layers, both
