Photolytic production of CN molecules in a flow of metastable argon and cyanogen is reported. At the maximum pump laser fluence investigated (0.4 J/cm'), ground-state CN concentration is found to be enhanced by about 1% over the ambient CN produced by collisional dissociation of C2N2 by Art. It is concluded that this signal is due to photodissociation of CN polymer formed in the flow downstream of the mixing zone. The presence of such species does not affect the interpretation of CN optical-optical double resonance experiments being carried out in our laboratory.
