✦ Synopsis

The phololysis of iodine has been studied in the gas phase using laser flash phololysis at 6943 A. The dcpcndcncc of the quantum yield on the pressure ha_s been invcsligatcd in the range 0.1-1000 atm for several inert ~ascs. For Kr, Xe, 02, COz, CH4, CzHb and C3Hs a dccrcasc of the quantum yield with increasing prcssurc was obtained; for Hc, Nc, Ar and Hz no effect could be observed. Thcsc results may correspond to a photolytic cage effect of iodine in the pas phase analogous to that known from the liquid phase.
