✦ Synopsis

Photolysis of pyrophosphate and tripolyphosphate ions in aqueous solution is proposed to produce electron detachment with formation of pyrophosphate and tripolyphosphate radicals (with quantum yields Ͻ0.1 at 266 nm), respectively. Formation of P 2 O 7 и 3Ϫ is observed after photolysis of both polyphosphate ions, because the decomposition of P 3 O 10 и 4Ϫ yields P 2 O 7 и 3Ϫ . The latter radicals further react with hydroxyl ions (k ϭ 1.4 ϫ 10 6 M Ϫ1 s Ϫ1 ) generating HOи radicals. The reaction of the solvated electrons with molecular oxygen produces O 2 и Ϫ . The rate constants for the reaction of SO 4 и Ϫ radicals with P 2 O 7 4Ϫ and P 3 O 10 5Ϫ were also measured.
