โฆ Synopsis
Three benzoin ethers (methyl, ethyl, isopropyl) were photo&d at 77 K in glassy ethanol, i.e. in a homogeneous solid environment. Benz& benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, benzoates, desoxybenzoin and oxetanols were the products obtained. The last two (Nor&h type II) products were formed only after prolonged irradiation times. Since the degrees of benzoin ether photoconversion were low and almost independent of irradiation time, it is concluded that the formation and subsequent recombination of primary fragments are the main reactions.
