✦ Synopsis
ESR observation is described of a new type of reaction of alkane radical cations in solid matrices; the cyclobutanc rodi cation in CFCIJ and in SF6 suffers photoinduced ring opening followed by I J-hydride ion transfer to rcarrangc into the but-l-ene radical cation, which further photoisomeiizes into the cis-but-2ene radical cation. The results EUC compared with thermal ring opening reported for the cyclopropane radical cation to give the trimethylene radical cation ~H2CH2CH~ in CFCI,CF,CI. A possibility of hydride ion tmnsfcr to form CHZCH2CH3 is discussed as an alternative interpretation of the spectrum assigned to the trimethylene radical cation.
