β¦ Synopsis
A novel photoinduced reduction of group 16 heteroatom compounds such as organic selenides, tosylates, and tellurides has been developed. In particular, organic selenides, which can not be reduced with Sml 2 in the dark (or even in the presence of lIMPA), undergo reductive cleavage efficiently by using the S,d2-hv system.

Elemental sulfur can be reduced to the corresponding thiolate anion species (S β«Χ2β¬ and ) se- ## β«Χ2β¬ S 2 lectively by samarium diiodide in the presence and absence of HMPA, respectively. The subsequent alkylation of the thiolate anion species provides a useful synthetic route to dialkyl sulfides
