✦ Synopsis
Photodissociation of jet-cooled NOCl at 355 and 499.4 nm proceeds via parallel and perpendicular transitions, respectively, and the dissociation is fast and direct. State-specific NO spin-orbit and A-doublet population ratios are observed. At 355 nm, [ NO( *II& ] a [N0(2111,2) 1, and the Adoublet component perpendicular to the NO plane of rotation, n(A" ), is preferentially populated in both spin-orbit states. With 499.4 nm excitation, we find that [NO('II,,,)] > [NO( 'II,,,)]. Also, the two NO Adoublet components of NO( 'II,,,) are equally populated, while in the NO(211,,2) state 17(A") >17(A' ).
