Abstract

The photochromism of 4‐alkyl‐N‐(4‐methoxysalicylidene)anilines was investigated in amorphous polymer matrices. The absorbance change after irradiation increased with extending the length of the alkyl chain due to the hindrance of conformational change and the stabilization of the colored species by the alkyl side chain. The thermal decay reaction deviates from the first‐order kinetics. The deviation depends not only on the heterogeneity of the polymer matrix but also on the length of the alkyl chain of the anils.
