✦ Synopsis
Abstract
The photochemically directed self‐assembly of azobenzene‐ and CD‐modified silica particles is presented. Azobenzene‐functionalized SiO~2~ nanoparticles are synthesized from carbodiimide‐mediated condensation of the amine‐modified nanoparticles with (phenylazo)benzoic acid. The complementary host particles are synthesized by reacting amino‐SiO~2~ with monotosyl‐CD. DLS shows the UV‐triggered agglomeration and disaggregation of the particles due to (E)‐to‐(Z) isomerization of the azo group. The photoisomerization process is monitored using UV‐Vis spectrometry. This technique of directed self‐assembly of anisotropic particles is an attractive option to form useful 3D superstructures by tunable agglomeration.
