The photodegradation of aromatic polymers involves several distinctive reactions including both direct photolytic pathways and photo-oxidative processes. To account for such a complexity, the photoreactivity of four aromatic polymers is detailed. The mechanisms of photochemical evolution were probed

โฆ Synopsis
A study has been made of the photolysis and photo-oxidation of phenoxy resin. Photolysis results in the evolution of hydrogen, methane, ethane, propene, propane, toluene, and the oxides of carbon. Also o b s e ~e d are increased yellowing, a rapid rise in gel content, and a decrease in intrinsic viscosity and elongation. Photooxidation causes similar changes, but produces oxidwed chain fragments, more gel, and less yellowing as well as broad absorptions in the hydroxyl and carbonyl regions of the infrared spectrum. A fret+radical mechanism is proposed in which both chain scission and crosslinking occur.

A novel method has been developed to toughen phenolic resin using phenoxy resin. Phenoxy resin was dissolved in phenol to form a glutinous mixture at 110ะC, and an acid catalyst ( p-toluene sulfonic acid, PTSA) was utilized to reduce the viscosity of mixture. The mixture was blended with resole-type
