1:ypirae o j Sepdonium inccutcc~ by nlyceliu,,l.deco,,ll"aiilg lackria ( x 1020) demonstrate tliis point. Samples of freshly-grown iiiycelium were washed and werc plnced in sterile water one nntl two days bcfore . an? ininicdintely before iiioculiitioii with bncteria. The cultures werg incubntcd at 25' c. and the time tukcti for the complete decomposition qf the mycelium was noted. The miiiples of mycelium which had been in water for 2 days bcforc being inocuhted with bncterin werc co,niplctcly dccomposed in 3. days, those which hnd been in water for 1 dny before being inoculated took 4-5 dnys, nnd the sariq~lcs wliicli were inoculated just after being put in water required 7-8 days to become completely dccomposod.
The effcct of diffcreiit concentrations of glucoso, peptone, sewnge, nnd primnry eflluent on the decomposition of Sepdotiiuttr mycelium by those bnctcriu wns studied. Concciitrntioiis of 0.02% glUC088, 0.1% poptotie, and 25% sewage nnd primnry eillucnt had no effect. ,Decomposition wns inhibitcd by 0.2% glucose n!id by undiluted sterilised or unsteriliscd sewage.
The action of tlie iiiycelium-decomposiiig bncterin on pieces of film containing Sepedotiiur)i mycelium .from the surfnce of filter A 'and from below the surfnce of filter C wns investigated. It wns found that the. mycelium in the film wns decomposed if the film was .prtviously pnrtly 'sterilised by trentmeiit for 18 hours with 0.6% hydwhloric wid. Untreated film wns not nffectad by the Aprll, ID121 LWIETERY A N D THEIR USeS

## Abstract Thin coats of flameβretardant paints are unable to protect flammable substrates as there is not sufficient flame retardant in the thin coat to protect the substrate. Intumescent coatings foam and bubble when subjected to high temperatures and create multicellular cushions which prevent
