Abstract

A new synthesis of porphyrins from pyrrole and substituted benzaldehydes is described, with PCl~5~ as catalyst. Aromatic aldehydes condense irreversibly with pyrrole in the presence of this catalyst, and aerobic oxidation of porphyrinogen provides functionalized porphyrins in yields of 20–65%.

## Abstract Complexes of phosphorus pentachloride with 4‐dimethylaminopyridine and __N__‐methylimidazole were synthesized. The molecular structure of the phosphorus pentachloride complex with __N__‐methylimidazole was determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. In the cationic part of the compl
