Octaethylchlorin forms a violet mono-cation and a deer, blue di-cation in two discrete stages on spectrophotometric titration with trifluoroacetic acid in chloroform solution, and similar results are obtained with chlorophyll derivatives although the colour changes are much less pronounced.
