This edition which began with three volumes of letters from the Frankfurt period is making them available for the first time. German description: Die Briefe Philipp Jakob Speners (1635-1705), des Begrunders des Pietismus, sind fur die Kirchen- und Kulturgeschichte Quellen allerersten Ranges. Sie gewahren Einblick in das Werden und die Ausbreitung der pietistischen Bewegung und sind daruber hinaus von einzigartigem Informationswert fur viele Gebiete des geistigen und gesellschaftlichen Lebens auch ausserhalb des religios-kirchlichen Raumes.Mit der vorliegenden Edition, die 1992 mit dem ersten Band der Frankfurter Briefe (1666-1674) begann, werden diese Quellen erstmals zuganglich gemacht.Die Briefe sind chronologisch geordnet, mit einleitenden Regesten und mit einem textkritischen und einem kommentierenden Apparat versehen. Ausfuhrliche Register dienen der Erschliessung. Der vorliegende Band enthalt 149 Briefe.Mit dem ersten Band von Speners Dresdner Briefen liegt ein weiteres Zeugnis sorgfaltiger historisch-kritischer Editionsarbeit vor.
