โฆ Synopsis
data would support our conclusion of the dangerous potential of phenylpropanolamine, both alone and in combination. Current marketing practices are playing Russian roulette with those people who have no idea they are hypertensive or have an autonomic system variability that places them at high risk. Furthermore, the over-the-counter diet suppressants are all too available to children and adolescents who do not need any more substances for potential misuse. Adolescents continue to experiment; 20 of the 40 New Mexico Poison Center cases involved individuals between 12 and 18 years old.
We have yet to see in the literature any data convincing us that phenylpropanolamine and caffeine anorectic preparations meet any reasonable risk/benefit test. Where are the efficacy data that show its superiority to behavioral modification for long-term weight loss?
