β¦ Synopsis
Investigations on the temperature variation of specific volurnr and ultrasonic 1 elocitj are carried out t o study the pliase transitions i n the liquid crystals 4'-n-l'erltj loxj -4-Cyanobiplienyl (5OCB) and 4'-n-Oct~loxy-4-Cyanobip2ie~~~~l (SOCB). Froiii these studies various parameters like the adiabatic compressibility (Pad), molar sound 7 elocit5 or Rao number ( R J , molar compressibilitj ( R ) , Van d r r Waals constant ( b ) and the iuterrilolecular free lengths ( L ) are estimated us a function of temperature in tlie isotropic as well as in the niesophases. Finally tlie . ariation of tlie order paraiiteter witli tenrperature in the rieinatie phase is studied and the results are discussed.
