Using phase-coherent optical multiple-pulse spectroscopy, we report the measurement of phase-and energy-changing coIlisiona1 cross sections in I2 gas. WC obtained the following cross sections: ophase = 590 -C 110 AZ and oenergy = 227 f 12 A2. At 30 mTorr, 40% of the homogeneous is due to phase-changing collisions, and the total Iinewidth therefore does not give the lifetime directly.
