So, how does the book match up to these mighty claims? My personal view is that a seminal reference text should have (at least) the following characteristics:

* Almost totally comprehensive (e.g. the Oxford Textbook of Medicine, which runs into three volumes) * The information that one wishes to find should be in one place, i.e. in a single chapter rather than dotted around
