✦ Synopsis
Abstract
pH is shown to exert a profound effect on the selectivity of the Cu(I)‐mediated oxidation of toluene with oxygen or hydrogen peroxide. At low pH, methyl‐group oxidation predominates, whereas at pH > 3, ring hydroxylation prevails. A common mechanism for oxygen and hydrogen peroxide oxidation is suggested.
