✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A pH sensitive hydrogel was obtained by γ‐ray radiation polymerization of AAc in aqueous solution. The temperature sensitive monomer NIPAAm or the same pH sensitive AAc monomer was then grafted to the PAAc hydrogel with gamma radiation. The comb‐type graft polymers obtained net‐AAc__‐g‐NIPAAm and the net‐AAc‐g‐__AAc, have been studied through determination of graft yield and swelling behavior at room temperature. The critical pH value was found between 4.5 and 5.5. An unexpected unique behavior with an UCST has been found around 30–32 °C. Other techniques employed to characterize the comb‐type polymer included DSC, SEM, and FTIR‐ATR.
