✦ Synopsis

We were not able to identify a 1,4-dipolar compound after reaction of ( I ) with acrylonitrile; the cyclobutene derivatives (7) were isolated.

I ) does not give a 1,4-dipolar compound, but because of the activated methyl groups affords the butadiene de-R-H2C * N H %N R ' R ~N HZC CN H3C rivatives (8). Cyclohexylidenemalononitrile and ( I ) , R = CH3, R1 f Rz = (CH2)3, afford the octahydrobenzo[h]quinoline (9), m.p. 119-120°, in an analogous fashion.
