✦ Synopsis

Volume 1 and 2 of this series deal with analysis and design of stormwater systems and modelling. I n Volume 3, titled "Planning and Control of Urban Storm Drainage", one section concerns the effects of urban storm drain systems on receiving waters. P. LAYALLE el al. report the results of their research on the influence of sewer overflows in Qubbec city. Based on sampling a t four locations along the St. Charles River during nine periods of rainfall, the important shock load in the receiving water could be observed as a long-term degradation of the river through sediment leakage. K. BENNERSTEDT & G. BRATTBERG studied such effects on Lake Mlilaren, Stockholm, the eastern part of which receives 95 O/o of its total input of oxygen consuming matters and nutrients from two sewage treatment plants. They calculated the bacterial load. "When a recipient for combined sewer overflow is to be used for bathing simultaneously one can by this method decide the overflow allowed" ( 9 ) . On The Upper James River Estuary in Virginia, a model was used to generate storm runoff pollution load (S. L. Yu t K. C. DAS). I n Georgia, the assessment of water quality changes resulting from urbanization, agriculture and commercial forestry, re- vealed that there are significant differences in water quality conditions. The greatest change occurs in urban streams (K. T. MIKALSEN).-h the set of the four proceedings volumes, the study of the effects of sewage overflow occupies only a minor part. The many technical aspects, including modelling of the systems, help to reduce the outflow of sewage into rivers and lakes, but nevertheless, these pollution effects are still critical in many areas. A more intensive cooperation with limnologists seems desirable. H. CASPERS Auswirknngen saurer Niederschliige auf die Lebewesen der Gewiisser. Literaturliste Nr. 8 (Rev. I).
