✦ Synopsis

We discuss the basic work principle of spark counters with localized discharge. A review of the main counter characteristics as well as results of recent R&D is presented. Possible large scale applications for the investigation of ion-ion collisions are discussed: FOPI-a 4n detector at the SIS accelerator of GSI, Darmstadt; NA49 -a fixed target experiment at the CERN-SPS; ALICE -a dedicated heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
