โฆ Synopsis
Gamma-ray induced grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-Nylon-6 membranes were prepared and tested for the pervaporation separation of ethanol-water mixtures. Two methods were used for the pervaporation of the grafted membranes. In method-l, the substrate was first crosslinked and then irradiated in aqueous solutions containing acrylic acid and 0.04 M cupric sulphate. In method-2, the substrate was first irradiated in the grafting solution and then crosslinked in 10 weight % aqueous Al(NO3)3.9H20 solution. The best results were obtained from graft copolymer membranes with PAA content between 15 and 20 weight %, which gave separation factors ranging from 10-25 and permeation rates of 30-250 g/m 2 hr. The effects of monomer concentration and the radiation dose on the percent grafting as well as the effects of feed composition on the separation factors and the permeation rates have also been investigated.

Crosslinked blended membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and N-methylol nylon-6 were prepared either by thermal crosslinking at 180ยฐC or by chemical crosslinking with maleic acid. N-methylol nylon 6 membranes were prepared by reacting nylon-6 with formaldehyde. Elemental analysis, used to analyze the composition of modified membranes, showed that the degree of substitution increased with formaldehyde content in the reaction solution. The modified nylon-6 membranes exhibited a
