Simian virus 40 (SV40) was used to probe ultraviolet light (UV)-induced mutation in mammalian cells. Viral mutations were scored as reversions of early and late temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants to the wild-type (WT) phenotype. When virus was exposed to moderate or high UV doses, WT revertants were
