✦ Synopsis
Many-body perturbation theory is used to study the expressions for the polarizability of an interacting pair of rare gas atoms. The applied scheme permits an analysis ofthe SCF, dispersion and intraatomic correlation contributions to the pair polarizability. The short-and long-range effects within each contribution can be separated. For the long-range terms, the form of the coeffkients of R-" in the expansion of the pair polarizability can be rederived in a systematic way.

The SCF perturbative method de&eloped for the calculation of static pohrizabilities is extended to the frequency-dependent case. Calcuhtions are reported for helium and methane. The helium results are compared \vith those of other x+orkers.
