✦ Synopsis

Vector method procedures arr adapted to evaluate Rayleigh-Schriidiiger perturbation corrections to a multiconfiguration zeroth order function. If this function is sufticientiy flexible, this perturbation theory can be applied to low lying excited states_ The effectiveness of our theory is demonstrated on the ground state of F2 and the low lying excited states of Mg2-Energies caiculated through fourth order are compared with appropriate CI results.

## Abstract The quasi‐degenerate perturbation theory (QDPT) with complete active space (CAS) self‐consistent field (SCF) reference functions is extended to the general multiconfiguration (MC) SCF references functions case. A relativistic direct perturbation theory approach has been implemented at the multiconfiguration Hartree᎐Fock level into the numerical program package LUCAS. The method has been applied to the closed-shell Be, Zn, Cd, and Hg atoms and to the rare gases Ne to Rn. The scalar relativistic valence-corr
