The excited state behaviour of pyrene and naphthalene was examined in functional surfacmt units in which silver ions, A$, served as the micellar counterions. Throwh local orgaoization present in these molecular aggregates, A$ can exert a very efficient external heavy atom effect leading to drastic enhancement of the triplet and phosphorescence emission yields
