โฆ Synopsis
The prediction of the noise radiated by a fluid-loaded structure generally requires heavy calculations. If the fluid density is "small enough", the structure's response is very close to the in vacuo one. Perturbation techniques account for this particular property: the structural damping, due to the presence of the fluid, is introduced by calculating "correcting terms" of the in vacuo response of the structure. A simple example is presented (a baffled one-dimensional plate in air) in which the structural response is expanded in terms of the fluid-loaded eigenmodes: these modes are calculated by the perturbation method described here. The results obtained are in very good agreement with the numerical solution of the exact equations.
