โœฆ Synopsis

directed by Professor R. โ‚ฌ3. Cattell, received an Office of Education grant to study, among other factors, the effects of a child's personality, motivation system, and intelligence on his achievement in school. This study is still in progress, but already many findings have been written up for publication in educational and psychological journals. The content of these articles is essentially in the form of fairly elaborate statistical presentations through which the counselor or teacher must wade in order to reach "practical" findings that could be of use in the classroom. This report attempts to present the results of the study that have emerged to date in nontechnical terms and in such a form that the busy counselor or teacher has access to the maximum of findings with the minimum of mathematical red tape. References are made to the original articles so that any one interested in the more technical details of the study can pursue them further.

The eventual aim, upon completion of all analyses of data, including family background and parental attitude variable in addition to the "within child" variable mentioned above, is to publish a complete account of the findings in book form that will be a t once understandable and useful to educators and counselors. I n view of the fact that the planned book in all likelihood will not reach completion for a t least 2 more years, it was deemed desirable to narrow the research-action gap by rendering this preliminary report available in a journal widely subscribed to by educators.
