ABSTRACTS
conducted to determine overall replant survival which has not been previously reported for this young a population. Thirty-~o replantations, three primary amputations, and six composite grafts were performed by the same group of surgeons during a 15-year period. Twenty-one independent variables were evaluated at four weeks following surgery. The digit survival rate was 69% which is lower than the 85% to 95% rate reported for adults but similar to rates reported for other groups of children. Replants which were more likely to survive were clean-cut and occurred in children weighing greater than 11 kilograms. Digit position, level of amputation, and total ischemia time did not affect survival. Blood transfusions were required in 41% of children. The nine digits that failed to sur-vive were avulsion injuries and lacked either prompt reflow after digital artery anastomosis or at least one suc-cessful venous anastomosis. If both prompt reflow and at least one successful venous anastomosis were achieved, survival rate increased to 95%.
