✦ Synopsis
The performances and the potentialities of applications of a LaCl 3 :Ce scintillator have been investigated deep underground in the Gran Sasso Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. In particular, the light response, the a=b ratio, the a=b discrimination capability and the radioactive contaminations have been studied. The results of an experimental search for spontaneous cluster decay in La isotopes are also presented.

A new cerium-doped LaCl 3 (Ce) scintillator is evaluated with respect to the application in environmental gamma-ray dosimetry and spectrometry. The scintillator is very attractive for gamma-ray spectrometry in the case of high count rate, because it has excellent energy resolution and fast decay tim
