✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Several comprehensive research programmes have been initiated recently in North America and Japan to improve our understanding of the seismic performance of timber buildings. A large database of experimental results and innovative modelling approaches has been developed in these programmes. This paper is the second part of a two‐part series. It reports highlights from the state‐of‐art North American and Japanese modelling and analytical research activities.

## Abstract Timber structures often represent the largest percentage of structures built in regions at greatest risk of hurricanes and other high wind events. In countries in which wood structures are common, they often comprise the majority of residential, light commercial, and other low‐rise stru

A simple stiffness design formula including the effects of column elongation is derived for a slender steel building frame. The steel frame has prescribed column cross-sections obtained in the companion paper (Part 1) and the angles of nodal rotation at the beam ends related to the net deformation o

The existence of microcracks prior to loading indicates that contraction of the cement matrix is accompanied by its tensioning and rupture. In parallel, the contraction creates tensioned "granules" in the mortar as well. It is shown that the elastic modulus of concrete does not vary during loading,
