A diode-laser array end-pumped acousto-optically Q-switched NYAB laser operating at both 1.06 and 0:53 m has been demonstrated. An average output power of 1:3 W at 1:06 m at a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 60 kHz was obtained with an optical conversion e ciency of 18.1% and a slope e ciency of

✦ Synopsis
A CW NYAB laser at 1.06 mm end-pumped by a high-power diode-laser-array has been demonstrated. At the incident pump power of 11 W, a maximum output power of 3.2 W was achieved, resulting in an optical conversion eciency of 29.1%, and average slope eciency of 37.5%. The output beam quality factor was measured to be M 2 1X9X The internal losses caused by the NYAB crystal were measured to be 0.035 cm À1 . The NYAB crystal was also found to exhibit very strong thermal lensing under high-power end-pumped conditions.

Wavelength conversion of the Yb 3þ -silica fibre laser operating near 1.09 lm has been demonstrated by acting as a direct pump source for a small scale Tm 3þ -silica fibre laser to provide an output at 1.9 lm. The characterisation of the Tm 3þ -silica fibre laser is described; it operated with a thr
