β¦ Synopsis
The study deals with the perforrance evaluation of three SHCC SHRO plants, tno supplying water to rerote area towns and the third supplying aater to Jeddah: the 4400 ma/d OBB Lujj Plant, CoBBiesioned July 1888, the 2275 us/d Al-Birk Plant, coruiasioned Dee 1883 and the 12000 us/d Jeddah Plant, CoBBissioned 1818.
No membrane replacerent took place in any of the three planta. In spite of this, the three plants ehoa only a Bodest annual decline (fror design) in productivity ranging from 2.5% at Jeddah plant to 3.5X at OBB Lujj, and 'I.172 at Al-Birk plant. The larger decline at Al-Birk plant is possibly due to biological fouling of rerbrane. Product uater quality at UBB Lujj and Al-Birk nith TDS less than 250 pp~, is within HE0 recoraended standard of 500 PPB. Salt rejection by both stages of 88.52 at both OBB Lujj and Al-Birk plants indicates that their Berbranes did not suffer any serious structural dauage. The decline in salt rejection at both plants is leas than 0.22 per year.
On the other hand there has been a decline in ealt rejection in Jeddah plant, indicating structural darage to the Berbrane over the last 10 years. Both UBB Lujj and Jeddah plant had high plant availability, over 85% but their nater recovery was rode& 24 -28%. Biological fouling aas a probler nith the Al-Birk plant in ahich the feed was chlorinated (4 pp~) it dechlorinated nhile no biological fouling vas reported for the other two plants in ahich the feed ua6 disinfected by (0.5 -1 pp~) CuSO4. Other problers encountered uere material corrosion especially uith SS 318 and SS 3181 in both pretreatuent and desalination parts of Jeddah plant.

The complexity of industrial production plants results in difficulties in obtaining an overall view of plant performance and in finding the weak links that deteriorate performance and product quality. While control loop performance assessment is a popular subject, few authors address the problem of
