✦ Synopsis

The combination of reactive control with CAC or UPC has been proposed as the congestion control method in ATM networks. As one of these methods, the authors researched the backpressure congestion control method and analyzed the basic performance of the two-stage model. The model consists of the congested node and its next node; it was shown that the effect of congestion can be reduced in traffic that does not pass through the congested node by adding pushout rules to the next node.

In this article, the discussion is extended to a multistage model that includes source, relay, and congested nodes, and the propagation time of congestion in the network, the packet loss probability, and the average packet transmission delay time are estimated by computer simulations. It is shown that congestion can be reduced and the propagation of the congestion state also can be decreased by the addition of pushout rules to backpressure congestion control.
