โฆ Synopsis
An ion source having the shape of a Paul trap, associated with an appropriate length drift space, ensures perfect velocity focusing in time. The ion source must be operated by high voltage pulses, delayed with respect to the ionization process. Perfect velocity focusing is obtained for ions leaving the end cap tip. The velocity focusing condition, the mass dispersion and the aberrations of such a time of flight mass analyser were derived. For a specific geometry the resolution was calculated and compared with that of a classical reflectron of the same length. The mass scale, mass ranges, and the possibility of eliminating undesired mass ions, have been briefly outlined.
