Conferences such as the one that provided the chapters for this book are normally attended primarily by the speakers and a relatively small number of local chemists. Consequently, publication of descriptions of the conference talks in some form provides the only practical way to make the lecture content readily available to the chemical community. When this reviewer considers the relatively high cost of the present book and the fact that most chapters include relatively little background information and few literature citations, he is inclined to question the desirability of the present form of publication. A set of chapters written and edited in the style of the short review articles published in Accounts of Chemical Research would clearly be more useful to the chemical community and would not have required much more effort on the part of the speakers. Perhaps it is time for a serial publication that can provide, a t reasonable cost, properly written and edited descriptions of the sets of lectures presented a t small chemical conferences held throughout the world.
