โฆ Synopsis
The outstanding feature in the anatomy of the ordinary Bushman is the great number of 'infantile ' characters which he presents(1). That is to say, he has retained in his adult form many juvenile appearances and proportioils that a r e only transiently present in other races. So much is this tlie case that the usual description of the infant human skull found in text-books of anatomy epitomizes the salient features of the Bushman skull. Curiously enough, however, very little consideratioil seems to have been given to this interesting phenomenon presented by the Bushman of being sexually mature in a form which is only juvenile in other races-in short, of being a morphological infant.
Recent discoveries of prehistoric Bushman types (a), notably that of Peers in a cave a t Fish Hoek, where he excavated a very peculiar big-headed type in association with a prc-Bushman culture, have practically demonstrated tlie fact that the microcephalic Buslimaii has been preceded by a very interesting macrocephalic type. This new human variety, altliough resembling the Bushman in many ways, presents stronger infantile tendencies ; he even approximates to tlie 'foetal' in many of his proportions.

In the course of the description and in the subsequent discussion special attention will be devoted to the phe-203
