Head injury associated hypertension differs from essential hypertension in that it consists of increased cardiac output and normal or decreased systemic vascular resistance. It is also characterized by increased systolic blood pressure, tachycardia, and increased circulating catecholamines. The authors chose 6 patients with head injury who were managed in the same manner and who all had systolic blood pressure > 160 mm Hg after having intracranial pressure
